Might not work so well for the Interceptor...

I was at the army surplus store today and found these 1 gallon fuel cans. I got to thinking that it would be really cool if I could sandblast and gloss black powdercoat one. Then I could strap it on the back rack behind the second seat of the Shadow. Cruising some areas out here up in the mountains or across the plains can be a LONG ways between fuel stations. Since the Shadow only has a range of about 130miles, an extra gallon of insurance goes a long ways. Between 40 and 55 miles to be exact. I figure that can make a big difference when you hit 80/90 miles on that trip odometer and trying to decide if you REALLY need to fuel up again or can you just maaaayyyybee make it to that next station over Cameron pass.

The can was only $15 bucks. Seeing if I can call in a favor on the powdercoating would be the challenge.

    So here's the new can.

    Auxilery fuel can $15
    sandblast and powdercoating $50 bucks
50 miles of added range Priceless

How will this be attached to the new VFR1200 you are buying? Casters so you can tow it or maybe weld it to the sissy bar?

Heres the solution to the other problem we discussed. Nothing on how to make those freezedried Jo-jos taste like the real thing yet.

Haven't given mounting on a 1200 much though. probably in the center of a spare tire/wheel combo just like the rock crawler jeeps out here.

Don't much care about the Jo-Jo's as we're on a Jo-Jo free diet in this house.

Forunately, locations to potty are far more plentyfull than fuel pumps so diapers won't be necessary. See, when you're in the middle of no-f'n-where, it's pretty easy to whip it out on the side of the road if you need to.

BTW, in my OP I said I wanted black and I still would have prefered the look of gloss black. But since the can't isn't vented and would be baking in the sun on the back of the bike, I felt black wouldn't be the best idea.

The question now is, since the inside of the cap and the inside of the filler neck are coated, was the inside done with full coverage and the biggie is, is the particular powdercoat fuelproof?

If so, could you share the technical details and any data on the specific powder used and not just whipping something out?

The whole inside was not coated. The shop did get some sandblasting residue inside the tank that isn't rinsing out very easily. I do not have technical details to offer but the shop was an auto performance gearhead place that was familier with the application so I expect it'll be just fine. I also shopped another powdercoater before the one who did the work. They also knew the application and had no concerns about it.

The first shop wanted $75 for blast and powder. I told him I was thinking closer to $50 so if he'd do it for $65 then we'd have a deal. He refused so I left.

Walked into the second shop and showed him the can and what I wanted. He said they had a $40 minimum on powder and could blast it for another $10. Done deal. Took one week from the time I dropped it off.

With two powdercoaters there I am beginning to think that you may be closer to civilization than otherwise portrayed. Hopefully they both had at least an outhouse.

Not to worry about that blast media whatever it was. The worst that could happen is having to replace your carburertors or injectors.

Oh yea, I'm in civilization, now - right on the edge. And the joy of two wheels is the ease with which a person can leave it.

Looks good. Let's see some pics mounted up on the Shadow!

I didn't realize that was the shape of it -- with that on the luggage rack, you could likely put some gear on top of the can with it's little "luggage" rack -- or at least a six pack!
