I did a fork spring and custom shim stack upgrade on my 1991 VFR. I also did a bit of valve modification. I'm pretty happy with the results. Is anyone else doing this? Anyone else want to share their experience?

Here is my latest set-up and results; I'm using Sonicsprings (1.0 kg/mm) and Honda-HP (5W) fork oil. I chamfered the back of the showa 3-port compression valves to reduce oil tubulance and retained the stock bleed notches on both rebound and compression valves. I think the Showa 3-port valves (stock on many VFR's) are very comparable to RaceTech Goldvalves in flow rate. I purchesed the preload shims from RaceTech and all said I have less than $150 in everything including springs and oil.

    (preloaded compression)

Showa 3-port (chamfered with bleed notches retained)
    17 x 0.15 mm
    17 x 0.20 mm outer ring (14.1 mm ID) with a 14 x 0.15 mm inner ring
    (2) 17 x 0.15 mm
    8 x 0.2 mm clamp
    11 x 0.40 base

    (rebound)

Showa 3-port (with bleed notches retained)
    (9) 17 x 0.15 mm
    8 x 0.20 mm clamp
    11 x 0.40 mm base

Results: I really like the feel of the bike now in the turns. It feels very well planted and predictable. However, this has come at the expense of some harshness on poorly laid concrete freeways. However, the harshness is sublte compared to stock and I can live with it for long rides.

Does anyone else have set-ups they want to share or advice for shim stacks or valve modifications?
