I found something that might be of use for you VFR guys, a Project Kics Magnetic drain plug, they are $15 but i think its worth having since our bikes don't come with it from the factory.

Has a pressed in flush mounted super strong rare earth magnet, it does not protrude like some of the cheapy ebay ones that may interfere with oil sump or perhaps something that moves near it. Made in Japan, made of lightweight AL7075 aluminum and comes with crush washer. I just put one on my VFR, it should help catch the metallic particles before it gets to the sump.

I have seen these used and sen debris stuck to them. Not sure on the actual data on engine wear though.

if the engine is broke in and oil has been changed as required, then there should not be any metal..??sounds like its for a new engine...

Anything that wears is going to have small amounts of metal in it. Think about this, your engine and trans share the same oil. If you ever did a trans oil change on a car with a mag drain plug you will see that black dust, well with a bike you got engine and trans using the same oil.

I have not done the research on the composition of the VFR engine but on a lot of cars the magnetic drain plug is pretty useless as most of the engine is made of aluminum. That was the case on my Subie STI anyway.

Yeah except that the engine case/heads doesn't move/wear/rotate like the iron/steel parts inside such as the gears, chains, bearings, crank, rods, cams, gearbox, etc etc. The only real thing non ferrous is like what just the block and heads? Those parts don't move or really wear which makes up very little of the debris if any.

Bearings are made of non-ferrous materials

Just only the main crank and rod bearings, cams don't have bearings and the trans bearings are standard steel bearings.

    motor wear

    Guys,
There is always oil analysis...I use "Blackstone Labs" they send you everything you need....new I didn't do one but as my vehicles get mileage on them I send in a sample ..its like $20 for a sample and gives you some heads up on what is wearing.....no it doesn't stop wear but you get a heads up if premature wear begins or if there is extra contaminants in your oil{ coolant}...YMMV but I value knowledge....

Remeber, the oil analysis is only as good as the sample taken. Most labs throw out samples that have visible matter, b/c it eff's with the testing equipment. Run the bike around, go back home, draw a sample out with a CLEAN tube/hose and pump.
