i have an 85 vf 500 intercepter with a few issues. first, it will not idle with the choke off. the only way i can get the bike to start is to crank the choke all the way open, turn the bike on, and ease the choke about 1/4 closed, any less and it dies. im sure this next problem is related in every way but the bike idles extremely high to, about 3500 and when i gas it to go, the bike bogs down and about half the time dies. thats the biggest issue i have with the bike right now. any ideas on how to fix?? i thought about getting aftermarket carbs though i dont have the money for them so im pretty stuck.

Clean your carbs and check the boots for cracks before buying new ones.

yup, clean the carbs... sometimes gunk builds up, especially if the bike sat for any length of time... mine ran like crap til I did that, now it's a monster :D

I have been looking high and low.

I just purchased my 85 vf500 yesterday and it has the exact same problem. I put some sea foam in it but didnt help too much. Did cleaning the carbs fix it?

if the bike won't idle or bogs then it's carb cleaning time. take each carb apart 1 at a time, so you don't mix the parts up. don't seperate them from the top. lot of carb cleaner and air. when your done the bike should fire up without the choke and should idle about 1000 +- 100. good luck let us know how it's going. seafoam is used for light cleaning.
