So I think I'm going to go ahead and do an Ohlins rear shock and I'm looking at the options. The cheapest one is actually less than I thought, $650. As far as I can tell the only difference between it and the $1000.00 one is that it does not have a hose mounted hydraulic preload adjuster. While that feature would be super nice, I think for 300 bucks I can do it with a spanner. Anyone have this shock? It's the S46DR1. Is there a compelling reason to spend literally twice as much on their top end shock, the S46HR1C1LS, if you're not going to do track days or anything? I just like to hit the twisties a little fast now and then, nothing crazy.

Alternatively, I'd be open to a Penske but their shocks seem to be a lot more expensive.

If the more expensive one has a remote reservoir and the cheaper one doesn't then its worth it if you intend to tour with purpose in warm weather. The original SHOWA shock on mine even when new used to foam up and get bouncy with the rear tire feeling like it was flat after about 3 1/2 to 4 hours of hard riding in hot weather, since installed my Ohlins with remote reservoir has never foamed up no matter how hot or hard the VFR was ridden.

I have the Öhlins S46HR1C1LS and I love it, on the track and on the road. But I don´t actually need all, it would be enough with S46DR1 for me.
If I was thinking about buying a new chock wright now I would buy a Wilbers ( http://wilbersamerica.com/ ) instead, it can do evertyting that Öhlins can but cheaper.

Exhaust wrap on the rear headers should mitigate some of the shock cooling issues if you dont want to spring for the remote

Supposedly this shock (the s46dr1) has an integrated resevoir and doesn't need the external. Thanks for the feedback guys, I'll look over your suggestions and see what I can see!

I have the expensive one. Love it. BTW, $1000 even is a good deal!

    Hi!
Please tell me the spring rate do you have in your Öhlins rear shock and how much kg/lbs are you!
    Thanks!
My weight ~225 lbs in full gear. My handler can't tell me the proper spring rate in this case. Therefore I chose the S46HR1C1LS with 180 N/mm spring rate, because 170 N/mm is the dafault spring rate.
    Sorry for my english
