Hello all I have just purchased a 1990 VFR750F. I am fairly new to biking and very mechanically inept, but having done a lot of background research on VFR's decided it was the way to go. The bike has done 69000km's and has been very well maintained from what I can gather. Before I start doing any big k's on it I want to do a full mechanical check and make sure everything is as it should be. Any assistance with the following would be greatly appreciated; #at 69000km's is there any thing I should be worried about - I realise it has everything to do with the maintenance history, but is there anything inparticular that would be getting tired? #should I check valve clearances, internal engine type adjustments etc - and is there anywhere I can source the specs for this type of maintenance? #service intervals - oil/filters/plugs (any specific brands?) and how regularly? #should I consider checking/changing the fork fluid and is this a simple job? I have a mechanic mate who will guide me through servicing/maintenance, but any advice from people with experience with this bike would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Darin VIC, Australia
With 69K on it, you might want to check the valve clearances. I would definately check the fluids and change the oil unless the oil has been changed very recently. for brands of filters and oil, it is generally personal preference onwhat you chose, just be sure to get the correct oil, i.e. 10W40, etc. Also, you can look thru the sight glasses onthe clutch and front brake resevoirs. If it is dirty or cloudy looking, I would change it by bleeding the system of the old while replenishing it with new. If I can think of something else I will add it. Or someone else here may think of something I have missed or overlooked.
I think the answers to all of your questions are in the honda service manual. At least they are for my year model (1998) so I'd assume they put it all in the prior one. It's a very handy book to have and it helps to have the pictures and step by step instructions. I have taken my entire front end apart and put it back together with no more assistance than the manual and that was a big step for me. (I'm just getting to where I do most of my own maintenance...) welcome to the board.
