Just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself.

I've owned my 1984 VF700F for about 15 years, but she's been off the road for the last 12. I'm about to move to sunny Florida and want to get her running again. I figured that I'd join up to pick some brains (and some parts bikes) to get me up and running.

Congrats on being able to hang on to a bike for 12 years without being told to get rid of it by family, friends and neighbors.

You may be able to help some other folks with adding stuff as you get the machine back up to snuff.

    welcome.

Oh, they told me alright. I just never actually listened to them.

Welcome to the group. My brain is empty at the moment after firing a salvo of epletives at The Hartford, so picking it won't do you much good. lol

I've had the tank cleaned and re-lined. I've also replaced the plugs and the fuel filter and poured a couple of squirts of Marvel Mystery Oil into the cylinders. we then pushed the bike around (in gear) and you can see the pistons moving, so that's good. We get spark, but it just won't catch. I'm guessing that the carbs need a good cleaning and possibly re-jetting. I'll have it trailered over to the shop in the next week or two. With luck, that'll be all that it needs to fire up. Then I'll get into changing the oil (twice to really clean it out), the rest of the fluids and the tires. She's only got about 15k miles on her, so there's probably a lot of life left in her. She deserves the Florida sunshine after being cooped up in my parents' garage (and later their shed) for the last dozen years.

BK: did you try starting fluid / ether just to see if it'd fire / kick?
