Hello every one . I traded two weeks ago for my 1st 86 vf500f and really enjoying it . Far as I know its all stock but the open SuperTrapp slip ons . I put new NGK plugs , factory air filter , mobil 1 full syn oil and oil filter . It runs smooth dont smoke or rattle yet my friend has a 1990 CB1 400 with stock air filter , a jet kit and Kerker full axhaust system . My VF500 really dont give it a good run . The CB1 always out runs my VF . By factory specs on both bikes the VF500 should out do the CB1 400 by a little . Any help with what I should upgrade and / or tune ? When I got the bike the carbs were all out of adjustment . So now their all set to 2 rounds out . Also the petcock diaphram was bad . So I took the diaphram out and used 2 O-rings to seal it and plugged off the vac hose . It worked grate no leaks or any thing . When Im done riding I just turn the petcock to off . Thanks for the help ...

Have you done really good carb cleaning? It is a must to completely diassemble these carbs and a good bath in a sonic cleaner. Floats must be set accurately. New carb "boots". Make sure the diaphrams on the vacuum slides do not have ANY holes or tears in them. That "little" 500F should give that CB a run.

No Jeff I hadnt got that far into it yet . Hoping be for long I"ll have some extra money to put into it . Im waiting to get a manual 1st . I got a list of things I need and want for it . Fork seals, new tires befor long, new non o-ring chain , k&n air filter and a jet kit . Over all its a pretty nice bike . I posted 2 pics of it on here . Im also new to the sport bike world . I started out on a 06 883 it was a dog . Then a 1200 Roadster HD it was some better . After that a 07 Night Train and almost last an 08 Heritage . Ive had lupus for 9 years now so I had to let my last bike go . My Uncle let me keep his Kawasaki Vulcan 900LT for 3 years . After that I just had to have another bike . So my friend showed up about 2 months ago on the CB1 . And I loved that rush of power . Most of all having a bike helps me deal with my health problems . Plus for me the Interceptor is more comfortable than then CB1 for me . So if I can get the hp up on it I'll have the best of both worlds . Id like to test ride a VFR800 they have a used 07 at Southern Honda Power Sports in Chattanooga .

I have a friend here who also has a 500F which is jetted(I couldn't tell ya what size) and also has a Yorishima exhaust system and non-oem sprockets. He had bought it that way. It was a non-running project and the PO had put too large of jets which made it run too rich. He has since replaced the jets and it is definitely running much better now. Now granted he does weigh a good 50 pounds more than I. (I'm at 195) my 500F with stock air filter, stock jets, and stock exhaust system can stay right with him in the straights. The fat bastard can outride me though.
It's possible you'll have better results than what he has but consider the money invested vs the performance gain. ALSO if you do re-jet these carbs and remain with a stock exhaust you will have a performance loss. Good luck with your project. Possibly the best sport bike to learn how ride a sport bike on. Good power but not so much that it will scare the living #@$% out of you. I'm running Pirelli Sport Demons on mine. This past Sunday was probably the hardest I'd ridden that 500, no slip so far.
