I have been giving some thought to joining a motorcycle organization. I was leaning towards the Honda group, but maybe I should join the AMA. Any comments from members of different ones out there. Cost/benefit etc? I have seen a few posts about savings. I'm thinking I could really make it worth my while as it seems I'm going to go through a couple sets of tires a year plus misc parts.

    Reg,
As for savings, each has their own pros and cons as to where they have discounts and how much those discounts are, as well as they are not usually the same. For instance, You get hotel and car rental discounts with the AMA as well as the discount at bikebandit.com, which I mentioned in another post. With HRCA, you get different coupons for $$ back on things like on MSF, Honda oils (if you spend over $50), Reg Pridmore's CLASS Riding School, etc. Each is unique. There is on major difference.
The AMA is the organization that lobby's governments, federal, state, and local forthe benefit of riders. I made a mention in a recent post about the AMA's Justice for All campaign which is lobbying, at all levels of government, for stiffer penalties when someone is killed with a motor vehicle. This is for both drivers and riders, not just on or the other, but equal. This campaign was started due to the death of a rider in SD (I think, maybe Kansas) who was killed by a US Rep (Janklow) who was wel known for not obeying traffic signs as well as speeding, and the resultant penalty was a fine (a small one at that) and a brief stint in jail. HRCA does none of this aspect of the "sport". The AMA fights against discrimination by communites against motorcycle riders.

Check out the AMA website, AMA-cycle.org. Membership in each is about the same cost per year, but overall I think the AMA is probably the best bet. I recently joined HRCA, but it looks like it is geared ore toward events and what-not instead of motorcycling as a whole. But I would say they both are worth the money.

<long story made long by me, I will shushy now.>

Kewl. Congrats reg. I think you will find what the AMA has to ofer useful. I know in recent months I have, especially with what goes on with the Justice for All campaign. With you being in Cali, there may also be more events for you to attend than there is for me. I mainly joined back in the 80's so I could race motocross, but now that I ride the road, I find there just isn't much AMA related events happening here. Oh, well. I still enjoy the benefits of the AMA. I also have the Motow, too, but only for the bike. Haven't had to use it yet, but it looks promising.

you know I have thought about that, but it's betting against yourself to me. like life insurance and car insurance. I'm already betting I'm gonna die sooner than they are (the insurance company) then Im betting I'm gonna wreck sonner than they are (car insurnace) Im not gonna bet Im breaking down too! ;)

lol I am not betting that either, but I want to be prepared for it whether I need it or not, just like I carry rain gear when I ride to work, whether rain is forecast or not.

I believe in everything Vinny has to say about both . I belong to both organizations. Ditto from Vinny on AMA but I joined HRCA for the updates on Honda stuff, insider info earlier than the public at times, and perks like hotel discounts, Honda coupons etc.
Or maybe I just have this tremendous need to just belong!

hmmm.....a need to belong.....I find that a recurring theme with me. I am tired of being the lone wolf. lmao
Yes, they each have their own set of pros and cons. Each is unique in their own regards. And each serves a purpose to the motorcycling community.
