I just got done adjusting the valves & rebuilding the carbs on my 85' VF500. I put it all back together, fired it up (it runs & sounds PERFECT), but now it leaks oil out of the alternator cover. The gasket tore during removal of the cover & nobody seems to sell it anywhere.

Do I have to make a new one out of gasket paper?

Can I use aircraft crankcase sealer in place of a gasket?

I use the aircraft crankcase sealer on my Mercruiser Alpha One boat outdrive when I change the disposable water pump impeller & it works great.

I kind of dread having to make my own gasket as the sealing surface is very narrow & I don't want it to look like homemade crap.

I have cut side cover gaskets using this method. Place the gasket material on a flat smooth surface, position the side cover on the gasket material, hold it firmly in place and tap around the edges of the cover with a rubber mallet, this will make an impression in the gasket material. Use the proper size hole punch to cut the screw holes then cut the gasket out with an Xacto knife.
