Recently here in Canada about 3 months ago a friend of mine and fellow VFR owner started an investigation into chains, because he wanted to try and save some money by buying online! He looked at all these VFR chains for sale online covering all years and generations. What he found out after 3 months of investigating was kinda scary, 5% sold online are actually new chains (in packages still wrapped) the other 95% are used but are advertised and basically just cleaned up for the photo! My buddy works for a major metropolitian paper, after he told me about his findings, I thought I would pass along this news to fellow VFR owners who plan to buy supposedly new chains online! His advice don't take the chance buy from a respectable motorcycle shop or Honda dealer! At least then you can be sure, because if your chain let's go while on a long trip or ripping around town with friends in the daytime or night time it can a terrible outcome!

    Cheers everyone....

I Had a chain go on my old KZ650 the second time I ever drove a bike. Tangled in rear wheel locking it up after splitting the primary sprocket cover causing engine oil to dump all over the road. I was only doing about 40km/h at the time so skid to a stop. My dad was with me on his bike so he went home and got the truck to tow me home. I never want to experience that again so I stick with buying good chains from local dealers.

95% ???Is that a local Ottawa problem ?
Is it all from the same place?
    never heard of it here.

I Have bought a half dozen over the last couple summers online on Ebay, always new and in the box.But always name brands..I have always got just what i expected.....Why would anyone buy a no name unpacked chain anyway? Obviously its cheap junk even if it is new if its a no name and unpackaged.....Do these buyers never complain or what?
I have seen lots of cheapo's on ebay, but there seems to be no big amount of negative comments...one would expect a few?

Something else to be aware of out there though!

But..I DO have a few old ones to unload..maybe I better get the cleaner out and shine em up...I hope I can unload even 50% of them....Ebay here i come :)

Part of his findings we're on Ebay and it's a continent wide problem thing about chains he uncovered! Not just Ebay but local online sites all across North America. Just beware that's all I'm saying! By the way if you sell an old or used chain and something happens, well you know where I'm going with this line of thought!

I could definitely see that happening on eBay.

I'll be purchasing a new chain very soon...not on eBay.

I have found that the used tire market is getting as big as the used chain and sprocket market. I don't like to have a lot of tread on my tires since that increases roll resistance. Used sprockets and chains are a lot lighter than stock. It always helps to douse them with a bit of slick 50 to reduce some friction. Then I pee my pants and set the living room on fire. Sometimes I just sit and stare out the window. Momma??

E K (enuma chain co) and DID get my votes. I haven't used R K( rk excel chain co) nor heard anything bad about them.

Regina wear out quicker from what I've heard but that's exactly what it is: hearsay.
