I'm doing some maintenance and came across some thick, stringy, oily substance inside my air box. The filter must have been in awhile now because it was quite dirty. There was a UNI foam filter inside. There was this "oil" in the groves of the lid and body of the air filter and it is really sticky.

Could this be excess oil used to saturate the UNI filter or did it come from anywhere else?

    thanks

The color will tell the tale...typically air filter oil is blue or red, if it is black, then it is coming in through the PAIR valve and associated solenoid. That is, if your machine is so equipped, which by the avatar photo, I would say that you have no PAIR. Based upon the consistancy you describe, the filter was excessively treated with air filter oil at some point, most folks who have never owned offroad bikes do this with aftermarlet street filters that require oiling. Remember, just enough to catch the particulates, but not so much that you choke off the filter and ruin the potential HP increase you paid for.
