Ok so I Just Bought a 85 VF700 from a former honda mechanic in the area. He worked at a dealership when these things came out. I asked him about aftermarket mufflers since he had a parts bike with yoshimuras on it. He said that aftermarket cans actually make the bike perform worse even when you go through the proper rejetting procedure. Im just thinking about taking off the stock cans and having a guy i know weld on a 2 pipes from the collecter so i can use 2 modern slip ons in place of the stock mufflers. As I understand, All 4 cylinders exhausts merge together in the collecter then go out to both mufflers. What if as an alternate Idea I was to take off the left muffler, weld closed the hole in the collecter then add 1 pipe w/ 1 modern slip on to the right side as a 4-1?I just find it wierd that aftermarket cans would actually lower performance on a bike. Im no professional mechanic but it just sounds strange to me. Any ideas?

Im not sure about that, with the correct jetting aftermarket pipes would make the bike run better. Oh as for welding the collector box up bad idea! The V-4's have a very unique exhaust flow by doing that im afraid it would make it run like shit. What your looking for is a hindle 4-1 if that's the route you want to go but I will warn you they a very hard to come by search ebay and craigslist that's where I found mine.

Putting slip-on's on my VF500 was one of the best things I did to it. Made riding it more fun.

This has been mentioned by others before. JamieD has mentioned it specifically of the VF500's.

    That's a horrible idea...please don't do that.
