I was on a ride this weekend with some friends and my 84 Vf1000f was holding it's own... then the engine cut off and the fun was over. Fuel pump died...original unit. I think I got my monies worth. Obviously not stock replacement available. What have you guys used for replacemnt? I have read that I can simply let gravity feed the carbs...... What say you gentlemen?

100% sure it's the pump? Did you jump the Fuel Cut Relay?

    I just had to ask.

I have though preemptively replaced all my 1000 fuel pumps. Let me expand on what I did a little later in another post. I'm not a fan of gravity on the VFs, and if you update a couple things, you don't gave to worry about the pump. Well not any more than on any other bike.

a simple test on any replacement pump is to measure the resistance across the 2 plug wires, where infinite resistance (zero continuity) means the pump won't work.

Oh man. I don't think I could sleep. I've left my bike behind a structure once, but it was to get laid. It was worth it. And I didn't sleep much.

OK... so this obviously doesn't guarantee no pump issues in the future, but I prefer to run a pump on my bikes that had them. This mod allows you to run a commonly available genuine Japanese Mitsu pump, both new and used. When you're done, all the routing is as stock. You can also get some tight radius formed fuel line and accomplish this as well, but this allows you to just hook back up the stock lines.

Read this thread of mine, it's the easiest way to convey the info. Be sure to note my post about the K&L application guide.

    https://forum.vf1000.com/t/fuel-pump-and-starter-more-options/3532

Pretty sure this was on my 1000R. The 1000F is very slightly different, but the key is, re-locate the new pump as far towards the battery as you can. I have done this on all of my 1000F/R and it works great, they plug right in with the correct vent. And then, if you have a prob in the future (unlikely), a easily sourced option is available from many sources. New pumps (Tourmax and K&L) are not cheap, but if I had just a couple bikes I would have gone new. I just look for the lowest mile, newest bike one came off from ebay. They are cheap and I usually get a bunch of nice formed fuel line with clamps along with it too.

I've seen some people cut the outlets short and eliminate the bead so the pump can be mounted in the same spot with some 90 deg adapters. That's not for me, but I'm sure it would be just fine.

You can also try and find a 86 VFR pump, but they are just as old now and new ones are hard to find. Fucking expensive when you do.

The other thing I highly recommend doing is wiring in a parallel switch to the fuel cut relay. I like keeping them too, but they can (do) go bad. It's nice for priming the carbs after storage or if it's been sitting for a while. But if you have a problem out on the road, flip of a switch and you're still riding. Not stopping and figuring out a jump wire.

I've told this story a few times. Heading out to a buddy's cabin with friends on the Peninsula, in the middle of a floating bridge my 86 VFR starts acting like it's running out of gas. Even though I know that's not the case, I flip to reserve and sputter to a stop. Fuck.

    "What's wrong?"

"I think my fuel pump relay just failed."

"Fuck. What the hell are you gonna do?"

"I'm gonna flip this switch and we're gonna go drink beer around a fire."

    "Oh."

I had to remember where I put the switch (under the left side cover). I usually try and mount them so I can get to it on the fly. I hear the pump start, bike starts and I take off. Hell yeah. I always carry a jumper wire with me for the person who hasn't installed a switch so I don't have to wait by the side of the road somewhere.
