I have a vfr800 that I bought cheaply from a salvage auction. It has sat in the weather for some time and is cosmetically challenged. It shows 36000 ks and
the oil looked like it has been in there most of them.I thought I should at least try and start it ,so I changed the oil, drained the stale fuel and charged the battery and was stunned when it fired instantly and idled like a new one.I was even more impressed when I rode it,as it feels like a new bike.Everything is mechanically perfect.
Question 1 .Are these bikes deserving of there bullet proof reputation ?
Question 2 Does the mileage roll back to zero at after 100,000 ?
The disc's thickness and general feel of the suspension and motor say 36000ks the cosmetic
condition say 136000 or more ?
I own 2 near new bikes but this beat up VFR has made a big impression and cost me peanuts by comparison.I was thinking I should paint it and cash in one of my other bikes?

Sounds like a keeper. Paint it or buy a used body set off flea bay. I have a shiny red tank that looks new (sitting on the shelf), a seat and a tailpiece I could part with. You don't really need the lower bodywork, if you don't mind a naked bike look. All you would need is a front fairing. Windscreens clean up like new with Novis plastic polish.

I'm sure it is 36,000 and was just (sadly) not taken care of.

Street fighter project baby! Put in some of the good stuff (synthetic oil, fresh coolant, and brake fluid), check bolts for tightness, check tires for cracks and weather checking, check chain and sprockets, drain the tank of gas, put some injector cleaner in, and give her a test ride!

you'd be better off getting rid of (like by putting it in my garage). I have around 55000 miles on my 98 and it doesn't show any signs of giving up. You can buy all new plastics for around $1000 from servicehonda.com. You can also find partial sets on fleabay all the time. You might end up falling in love with the bike if you do fix it up, though. The other bikes might get jealous.

The bike is not as bad as it sounds (see pic),I have located a nose cone and left fairing
Already and would be interested in your parts.Happy to pay USPS express mail.
What sort of price are you asking ?

It's no garage queen, but it's still respectable IMO. I'd keep it if I were in your shoes. If you don't mind my asking, how much did you pay at auction for it?

from your picture, it looks like the seat is fine. The tank I have was removed from my '99 because it has one 'ding" where my knuckle hit it in a tankslapper. Very small and did not break the paint. I can send pictures but I do not think you would be able to see the ding. I went with a European tank to try to get a different look (see my gallery). If your interested in the tank PM me an offer and send me your address. I have a mirror (a pair actually) if you want to replace that smashed left mirror. Its yours if we work a deal on the tank.
