A guy at the Honda dealership rode my bike and found everything in order. I specifically asked about the lumpy idle and feeling of running on 2 cylinders.

So anyone have a sound clip of what their 5gen bike sounds like at idle and revving slightly to about 2k? I think mine has a misfire. The tach needle flutters quite a bit in time with the engine sound.

The cam gears also tell me something is missing. Instead of a steady whine, it's more of a pulsating whirr that doesn't steady out until I give it some decent gas. Smooth as silk at 5k though...

Oh and my exhaust at idle sounds like a THUMP THUMP putting sound like a twin.

Alright, no takers. How about this, anyone with a 5th gen in the NOVA area that could let me listen in on the phone or something?

Hi Chris, My 5th gen idles rough and has what I would describe as a studder up to about 2k under a slight load or very very slow accelleration. I wouldn't worry about it being a major issue. I have heard that adjusting the starting valves can affect the idle quality either way, rougher or smoother. My '99 has a TBR full system amnd a PCII and was mapped on a dyno. The dyno print-out shows just shy of 110hp at the rear wheel. At any rate based on my experience and your description of the issue I wouldn't sweat it. Now if you just can't live with the rough idle quality I think I'd look at doing a starting valve adjustment.

For the idle you probably need to adjust the starter valves.

Make sure all the wire connectors on all the spark plug wire ignitors are good and tight.

Look in the modifications section. There is a sticky with exhaust sound clips. 5th gen is an 800cc so there should be some there of diff cans. Hope they help.

I took a .wav file of my bike, but Imageshack doesn't support that file. Any other way I can post it on here?

I think you can just upload it like it's a pic then put a link to it... it seems like I remember vman doing that anyway...

Thanks for the sound clips. There's definitely something wrong with my bike, at 2k the motor has an obvious miss which sounds like a chugging sound. Even 3k does the same thing.

Weird thing is, if I put some load on the engine say...crawling up my driveway, it feels like all 4 cylinders are firing. Instead of a CHUG CHUG it's more of a DA DA DA sound.

I'll have to drop it off at the Honda place again. The guy that test rode it said it sounds/rides normal, but after owning a Magna for a while I disagree.

Chris be careful how you're thinking! The 5th gen V-Four and the Magna V-Four are two very different animals. You may indeed have something wrong with your VFR but don't use the Magna as the benchmark for comparison.

No sound bite yet but I'll send one later. I bought a stayintune muffler and think it's the best sound for the VFR, several others I know have them.

Ok guys, see if this link works. Just a quick movie I took. Note that I tried to keep it around 2k, which seems pretty rough to me. Riding around at 3-4k is also not a happy area for the bike, which seems a bit odd to me.

EDIT: The video on Imageshack seems to be playing slower than what's on my camera, so the sound is a lower pitch.

Does sound quite uneven, doesn't it?

I'd start small, check the airfilter for mouse/squirrel debris, airfilter clean, exhaust leaks, coil/plug wires properly attached, coil/sparkplug/wires condition, gap, maybe new plugs if warranted, check the fuel system, maybe a plugged injector? Run some Techron through it, etc. Starter valve synchronization, etc, etc, etc.

Start with the simple stuff, weed it out, process of elimination, escalate as required from there.
