As you know, I just bought a 1999 VFR800 with 18.6k miles on it in mint shape. I have put about 500 miles on it now with no problems, so it has 19080 miles now approximately. Anyway, today I decided to commute into the office (70 miles one way), so I filled up at 5am with 93 Shell gas, and rode 25 miles and the FI Light came on and stayed on for the rest of my commute this morning. The bike was fine and rode great, no loss of power or anything goofy at all. So tonight when I go to ride home, should there be anything that I should be checking on the bike, or is the FI Light another one of the VFR800 intermittent electrical gremlins that it typically has?
Once you shut the bike down the light will clear but there will be a stored code in the ECM. This happened to mine the other day as well, if you have a shop manual read up on the FI light codes and perform the test. If you do not have a manual then self check is quite simple, locate your diagnostic port (should be on the left side under seat attached to wiring harness). Place bike on center stand with side stand down, place jumper wire in to both side of testing port, turn on key and kill switch, FI light should start blinking. Count the long and short blinks, these will tell you what the codes is for. if you need the help let me know and I can check my book against what you have found or you can do a search on the site. Thanks for the info. I will try to diagnose the FI light. My VFR service manual just showed up from Helm.com the bike is stripped down at the moment to the frame, so that I clean it up, service it entirely, and get it ready for some real riding again. I just got some new shoes for it this weekend, and my Staintune exhaust is on its way. I can't wait to put all this together.
