Rednek, I would bet a bundle of money it's your regulator/rectifier.
My '98 went belly up this past weekend....for the second time!
It had the same symptoms, after going slow through very tight
twisty curves (1st and 2nd gear) and getting up to 216 degrees.

    I just ordered a new battery and a new 2006 VFR800 reg/rec.
The 6th Generation R/R is supposed to be more robust.
Maybe someone here can tell us the real difference.

This time I am going to add the 12v fan on top of it, like many wise people here have done.
Some people reposition them forward under the fairing, in the wind, to cool them down.
However, after looking in that area on my '98 I don't see very much room.

It is the "Achilles heel" of these otherwise great bikes.

Depends on lots of things, like the ambient temperature, speed, load, etc., but I think the average, at least on my bike, has been around 172 degrees.
220 seems awfully hot to me.

My fan kicks on at 221F on my '07. Seems a little hot, but thats correct according to the book. As far as the guages, sounds like a loose wire or a bad ground.
