I recently purchased a '01 VFR. I want to put on an exhaust can(slip on). Are there any modifications that I need to be concerned with? The bike is a stock CA model with 7,300 miles on it. Can I simply bolt on a can without any negative repercussions to reliability and engine life? Thanks, Mando

Mount the exhaust and ride. The FI system can handle the pipe fine. But if you really want the bike to have the proper air/fuel mixture at all settings, get a Power Commander III and have a custom map made for it. That will set you back about $550 to $600 though  not long ago, K&N was doing a closeout sale on PCII's for $150 to your door. That is where I got mine. I have no idea if they have any left.

My 01 has the K&N air filter, stock pipe. Runs great. I put a full TwoBro and K&N on my 98 and it ran fine for 10K miles before I finally got around to installing a PCII and having a custom map made for it.

    Adios,

PCIII's are not available for the 98-01, only for the 02+. PCII's can be had on eBay for as little as $10 plus shipping. California 98/99 versions fit fine, you just have to program them with the appropriate map (the map is the only difference...regardless of what the VFRW fearmongers will attempt to tell you. I run one myself exactly like this).

That's an interesting new development. I would buy a PCIII over the PCII in a hot second...normally a manufacturer does not invest in reverse compatibility for a new product for older bikes no longer manufactured.

I'm very surprised to see that.

Anybody actually have one, or is this just another one of the many web pages that are created to tantalize with no real substance?

But... Doesn't the PCIII just have functionality (closed loop, O2 sensor, etc.) that the old-school, open loop EFI system on the Gen 5s wouldn't be able to take advantage of anyway...?

If that were the case (and I THINK it is) the PCIII would be no different, functionally, than a PCII when used on a Gen 5. It would simply re-map the EFI and the bike would perform exactly the same with a given map whether you're using a PCII or a PCIII.

Might as well get the 10-dollar eBay special.

    HTH,
    Jake

Good point Jake, I haven't invested enough time studying the PCIII like I did the PCII to post an informed opinion about that.

They are now available on eBay though:

...and this wouldn't be the first time that a manufacturer sold an aftermarket product that purported to be better than the older stuff...but it really wasn't.

Who wants to try it out first? :)
