How old is battery? Have you checked to see if alternator is charging? Sounds like battery is running down while running. Sometimes batteries will come back on there own, which is why it runs the second time, but not as long.

Great thread Mello Dude, right on.

Follow Mello Dudes advice, find a friend with a meter and some electrical knowledge. Could be a number of things, first thing you can do is check all connections and wiring for corrosion or damage.

    Hey Mike

I know what you mean by being not too good at electrical trouble shooting. When I did the trouble shooting on my bike the first time I didn't think I could figure it out but it was A LOT easier than I had assumed. Follow the instructions in Mello's post and I am SURE you can figure I out. Take your time and closely follow the instructions. The first sign that R/R was going bed on my 97 VFR (same basic bike as yours) was that my speedo started doing weird things like jumping around and then one day I went for a ride and it ran fine, then I shut it off and when I went to restart it, she was dead as door nail. I push started it and it ran for about 20 minutes and then died again. I limped it home about 200 km's and found that as long as the revs were above 5000 rpm it would run but as soon as they dropped below it sputtered and died. After reading the many posts on how to check the R/R on this forum I narrowed it down to the R/R on my bike. You really need to check the rest of the charging system though to make sure there isn't a problem elsewhere. Follow Mello's advice and I am sure you will find the problem and not spend a bunch of money replacing parts that are not the problem.

Could also possibly be a symptom of bad pulse generator, as that usually quits as it heats up, works again after cooling. Proper resistance tests and ohmage values listed in service manual.

Anyone lacking a multimeter and 1 or 2 amp battery charger and small air compressor for tires is unprepared for motorcycle ownership.

rode about 25 miles this morning(froze to death twice). cleaned up connectors. had an used r/r,put it on. ran like a dream with no issues. going out again after noon to make sure, but i think the r/r fixed the problem. thanks for all your responses and knowledge, mike

Your next step should be a voltage output test across the battery terminals with engine turning about 5000 rpm. Expect 13.5-14.5 vdc or expect further trouble.
