Finally got around to working on my 92' VFR. The PO limped the bike home after having lost 60% of upper throttle usage when riding the bike home from the dealer. The bike has sat for about 6 months until I purchased it. Initial symptoms were: Bike could start and idle for about 8-12 seconds then die (if given throttle it would just cut out). You could start and idle the bike twice like this but after that second time it would not idle / start again. After disconnecting a mickey moused motorcycle alarm installation the bike started right up and idled just fine. As soon as you give it gas or choke the bike dies. Fuel pump / relay is working fine, gushing out gas. There is some white smoke coming out of the exhaust plus the tell tale smell of coolant. Just want some opinions on what might be wrong. Blown head gasket, cracked head or .....?
white smoke usually means water in the oil - a head gasket leak. Have you tried a diagnostic by pulling plugs and looking for fouling (or a compression test)? Gen3 engines on ebay arent very pricey, so dont get over committed unless the fix is cheap. 91 1991 VFR750 VFR 750 INTERCEPTOR Running Engine Motor:eBay Motors (item 360173066646 end time Sep-19-09 11:07:31 PDT) Honda VFR 750 engine years 1990 - 1993 plus extras:eBay Motors (item 150369202829 end time Sep-05-09 07:03:28 PDT)
