'87 VFR700F2 Headstock Lock Plate Removal?

    Hello,

    I started to try and remove mine as I need to modify it to work with the CBR triple clamp that the ignition lock now resides. It's secured by tamper proof M8X16 fasteners. My plan of attack was to slot the tops and then use an impact driver to break them loose, however the first one I attempted hasn't gone well. Instead of turning free I've only succeeded in breaking part of the head of the bolt off. Has anyone out there has these out so as to confirm that they are standard rotation (clockwise to tighten) fasteners? If I have to drill them out it's going to be a real PITA.

    I would try to cut the heads off and remove the bracket and drip the bolt with vise grips to remove. And the are standard lefty loosie righty tighty bolts.

    I worked on it some more today before I had to head to work...The bolts have threadlocking compound on them, and whatever it is, it has a much higher melting point than what I encountered when I pulled the cylinder studs on my Ducati. The plate itself is off, and I've got the core of one of the bolts almost entirely drilled out. As time allows I'll try heat again and an easy-out and see what happens. In retrospect, I'd recommend anyone in the same situation to just modify the lock plate in situ, as this has turned out to be much more work than I'd envisioned...

    Couldn't you leave the screws undisturbed and use a cutting tool to take out the rest ??


    Seems scary to me to do any beatin on the alloy headstock. :eek:

    The frames on these are pretty stout, and I'm not beating it too hard...I'm going to have to drill the fasteners out and fix them with Helicoils. At this point, not too big a deal, but inconvenient to be sure. The bike will be so full of modifications when I'm done and would-be future owner will be lost, so I guess I can never sell it.
