    Hi I am wondering if a cdi unit from an '89 vfr750 will fit my '87 model thanks :)

    Try finding the parts numbers of each and see if they match.

    There are 3 types of cdi...
    86, 87, and 88 89.
    As far as I know, they're not interchangeable. The plug ends are different with differing numbers of wires.
    google rc24 cdi boxes, and check out the differences.
    Just noticed your UK based, I know somewhere that may be able to fix your old box.
