Just finished cleaning and reassembling carb from my 86 VFR750. It starts on the first stab, and comes off the choke normally. Throttle response is good but once it warms up the idle stays at 2500 RPM. Throttle adjustment thumb screw is fully backed off. Throttle cable has sufficient play and doesn't stick.
The only way to get the RPM's to drop is to force the handle bar throttle clockwise. Is it possible the butterfly valves haven't fully closed when the throttle is let go?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

absolutely possible. if you are twisting the throttle back to get the revs to come down then you have a problem. Make sure you don't have a kinked cable. You can also try a dry cable lube. Take your throttle apart and spray some dry lube down the throttle cable. Also, bar ends tend to get corroded so you may need to clean up the bar and use some dry graphite lube there too.

Thanks for the quick response, I'm planning to tear down the carbs (again) this weekend, will double check the throttle cable just in case.. I missed it the first go around.

Did you remove the manifold or disassemble the linkage between the carbs? It is a goofy set up and little things can cause problems.

Yes, I removed the intake manifold and linkage. The original problem was a sticking throttle which ultimately ended being caused by sludge in the seal where the butterfly valve support shaft comes in contact with the body of the carb. I carefully re-assembled per service manual and it appears to operate normally with the exception of the high idle. Although I noticed the throttle adjustment stop does not contact the ahrottle adjustment screw even when fully turned in. Toe Cutter, based on your rides it looks like you have some experience with the 86 VFR. any suggestions would be appreciated since the carbs are coming out one more time this weekend.

    ..........................................

Do a synch and see if that solves the problem.

IF you removed any throttle plates--which is almost never necessary--you might have bent a shaft ??
