I was given an 86 VFR750F a couple years ago by my brother. It was a salvage rebuild that he did. He's not able to do this work anymore. It ran OK the first year and never got it started again after the winter. I took it to a Honda dealer last year and they took the carbs out and tore them apart. They quoted me $1000 + to rebuild with no promises.

I put the bike in a shed for another year, with the carbs and pieces in a box. My son wants to try to get it running. I have read many horror stories about these carbs and rebuilds.

For you guys that know these older bikes, is this project worth the money and effort? Is the bike worth anything in the nonworking condition it is in? Any suggestions or opinions would be welcome.

find a rack of carbs that are together from a salvage yard give them a cleaning and start that ol girl up.......

or you could persuade one of the good folks here to put those ones back together for you.. for probably less than the cost of a case of beer plus shipping...

Woulda been damn smart to check here before you let a dealer take advantage of you ! It's almost NEVER necessary to seperate the carbs from the airbox base or the break the set into 4.

In many cases, simply cleaning up the pilot jets is enough to get the bike running again, and that would take less than 3-4 hours, including getting carbs off, back on, and time to empty some beers !

If you have all (or most) parts, you could PM me a price quote to assemble the parts, do some adjustments and tests, and pretty well guarantee that you have a set of clean, working carbs.

TC might help you for a case or two of beer if he's closer.

Thanks for the info. We're located in Iowa. I'm trying to locate the carbs at this point. My brother took the box with him with the intentions of helping but got ill and then moved to Arizona. I think the carbs are at his son's home here in Iowa. The last time I looked at them, I saw a million parts in a box. When I find them, I will respond to this post and hope someone will be able to help. I didn't think of looking for this kind of forum before. I wish I would have!

By the way, my oldest son is a cadet at West Point. I just saw two of you are from New York. I was just out there last week.

I checked salvage yards and found a set for an 86 VFR700. He says I would just need to change the jets since ours is a 750. He's asking $250 plus $25 shipping. Does that sound like a good idea?

Alot of money, but if you can get a running bike from the deal (assuming the bike will run Ok and doesn't need additional work or parts) maybe you should go for it, but most ebay carbs for that bike go for le$$.

As with any salvage yard carb purchase, you'd need to have them gone through and cleaned before mounting them up.

No need for any rejetting if the carbs are stock and unmolested.

Ask for some photos, and be sure the carbs have not been removed from the airbox baseplate.

I might just wait until I see some on Ebay. I'm not in a hurry on this. Any idea what year's carburetors are compatible with a 1986 VFR750F? It sounds like the used set that are functioning is a better idea than dropping hundreds into the old ones rebuilding them.

Lets have a picture of the ones you got and maybe you can trick one of us into putting them back together for some beers. Curious to see what kind of a mess we are talking aboot.

Close and clear picture of the needles and the size of the jets will go a long way in making me thirsty for beer.

The reason they quoted a $1000 to put them back together is because they didn't know how to do it and they knew $1000 would scare you off

    Interested ??

I'm looking for a carb project to keep me busy, and i'd be able to reassemble yours, run some tests to be sure they work and return to you for a very reasonable price, so PM me if you're interested or call Jerry @ 716 836-0154.
