I changed my plugs and boots, bike runs a little better but it's not charging the battery and it backfires when you rev it up. Will a bad regulator make it feel like it's running on 3 cylinders and backfire? Also when I pull the clutch in it takes longer for the rev to drop off after eccelerating so is hits hard into gear...What's all this meen?

you should synch your carbs but first charge your battery fully on a charger

the charging issue here might be your r/r. the charging system is simple, yet not so great on these 2nd gen bikes. it consists mainly of your stator, your r/r, and your battery. i'd start with having the battery tested, as it is the easiest thing to replace.

to combat the mediocre charging system in these bikes, I went on a sort of a tyraid a while back and did a write-up on the results of my research. here's the link below:

hopefully this can help to prevent future problems with yours.

nope, not at all. the R/R is a part of the charging system of the bike....think of it as the Voltage Regulator that you'd find on a cage (though most cages have the voltage regulators built into the alternators now). if your R/R was going bad, and it probably one day will, the bike just wouldnt start at all cause the battery wouldn't be getting adequately charged back up while youre riding.

this sounds like either your choke is still on (at least some), or your idle is set too high on the carbs. god forbid, worst case scenario, you might have a clutch issue, and its taking too long to disengage. the clutch systems in these bikes doesnt tend to be very problematic, but then again, you DO own a 25 year old bike, and stuff does eventually break.

what does this all mean? hah. it means you own a 25 year old sportbike, and you're being introduced to the various nuances and idiosyncracies of that 25 yr old sportbike. these things will definitely keep you on your toes, but theyre well worth it in the fun factor you get out of them on the road.

Always check for scorched connections between the r/r and the stator's 3 yellow wires as well as the main plug atop starter relay......FIRST.
