Right side engine on 86 & 87 vfr700 has a small round aluminum cover that can be unscrewed. This cover is removed to manually rotate engine when setting valve clearances. My experience the cover is often over-tightened and can't be removed without damage.
Anybody have any tips for damage-free way to remove cover ?

place a wood block against the cover and rap with a hammer. put a socket on nut and coordinate a hammer blow with turning. try some heat.

setting valves it's easy to bump crank around with starter or in gear using rear wheel.

Could always use a dead blow hammer. Good tool to have. Most places carry them... That's one from Advance Auto parts

I used a plastic chisel/scrapper tool which still left a mark.

I'm missing a third hand to try this out :p

Don't worry about taking off the small round cover - take the whole side cover off - just get a gasket this will help you then remove the round cover easier.
