Hello everyone. I am new to this forum and am happy to have found it. I just bought an '86 VFR 700 F2. My first sport bike I owned was an '87 VFR 750 F2. That was back in 1991. I have been an avid motorcyclist since owned and rode over 17 different makes and models of sport/sport touring motorcycles. I enjoyed the VFR the most though, of all the bikes Ive owned and ridden, so needless to say, Im PSYCHED! The bike has 18K mi and the body and mechanics are in great shape, but it was not maintenanced very well recently. It sat in a garage collecting dust and dirt for a few years before someone recently took an interest in it. It needs all your basics, Brakes F/R, New chain, new fr sprocket, It has brand new Bridgestone BattleAx tires and starts right up with the help of the almighty choke. Gas tank is clean and carbs were just rejetted. My next task is to attempt something I have never done before, Install a new front sprocket. I think since I am going to have to do this I am going to go with -1 tooth on the front I am wondering if any of you may have done this to the '86 model( -1 tooth down and personally installed it) , I have resurrected a few other bikes, what I am looking for is some tips or pitfalls to watch out for. Thanks V4Dan
you'll find no real problem unless the 14mm bolt holding sprocket is too tight. use good quality 6-point socket with SHORT extension (or none), use 1/2 " drive, put bike in gear and hold rear brake on tight. in worst case (unlikely) you might need air impact driver to remove. make sure you get each bolt securing sprocket COVER back into its exact same hole, and do NOT over tighten... Observe exact tightening sequence as illustrated in Honda Shop manual..try to preserve original gasket for re-use. be sure the all dowel pins are in place. leave clutch slave cylinder attached to sprocket cover by short bolt located at the 5 o'clock position. down one tooth is a good improvement....but wastes fuel. Good Luck, you'll LOVE the bike!
