I'm trying to swap the centerstand from one 86 VFR to another (as well as some other bits). But I can't seem to find anything in the FSM about the centerstand, and none of the pictures of the bike seems to contain one, so I'm guessing this is one of those options that wasn't factory but maybe dealer-installed?

Looking around at the centerstand on the bike it's on, I need to pull off the mufflers to get the exhaust pipes out of the way, but I don't see exactly what the mounting hardware is? allen bolts or similar?

(note that I haven't really torn into this, since I'd rather just do it by the book vs. taking stuff apart until I have it in my hands).

youre actually on the right track. heres the best step-by-step that I can remember. (its actually pretty easy)

    (1) verify that you have all 4 necessary parts. the centerstand itself, the inner mounting shaft thingy on which the centerstand hinges, the cotter pin that holds the mounting shaft in place, and the spring that holds the stand up when riding.

    (2) remove the exhaust assembly (pretty much the WHOLE thing behind the header pipes)

    (3) position the main centerstand piece in-line with the tabs (youll know the tabs cause theyll have big holes in them, the same size as the holes in the top of the centerstand), with the foot-part sticking out to the left side of the bike.

    (4) insert the inner mounting shaft thingy, preferably with the cotter pin hole going over to the right side of the bike.

    (5) insert cotter pin through the hole in the mounting shaft so it doesnt go anywhere.

    (6) install the spring, one end on the centerstand, and the other end on the frame (i think its on the frame, my bike isnt here at the house, or id double check for ya).

    (7) stand the bike up on the centerstand, and reinstall the exhaust.

    (8) put the bike down on the kickstand, raise the centerstand, and verify clearances, etc. youre done!

hope this helps. sorry i cant give you any more details, but like i said, my viffer is elsewhere at the moment.

The only hard part is the exhaust.

Knowing about that cotter pin is key, now I understand why I couldn't find bolt hardware on the bike the stand is on. This shouldn't be hard at all. Thanks much, guys!

I found a few pennies and dimes in the tension spring helped with the install on my center stand.

captb - What exhaust is that? I noticed on my 86 F2 with a centerstand, that it folds up and strikes a tab welded to the exhaust to stop further upward movement. My 86 RWB has a supertrapp exhaust, and doesn't have the tab. That, coupled with not wanting to disassemble both exhausts caused me to decide that I really didn't want a centerstand on the RWB that badly.

woody what you worried about?? its a very easy job..my 5ft nothing girlfriend helped me last time with my exhaust..she held one side while i slid it on. just clean the pipes good before you put it back on..i hit mine with a lil sandpaper and some pb blaster..I have everything from stock, dual aftermarkets and 4 into 1s..its not a hard job. trust when I say you will LOVE having a centerstand.

    1) getting it all apart. Although honestly, the hard part isn't where the main collectors are, and that's where it needs to come apart for this.

    2) I'm not sure it will play nicely with my supertrapp exhaust. I don't have a crossover between the pipes, and I don't have the tab for it to fold up against.
