i spend three weeks swaping batteries every three days, finaly i couldnt even start with a fresh battery anyone keeping track of how many times my R/R blew up so far? this is my third one in three years. ok this time is different - cause it was the regulator that blew. anyway i got a new RR, a new selenoid, and had the battery gravity checked. i did a leakage test & an output test the later didnt come out too good 12.8V @4K rpm is all i could get - so i checked the alternator 3 yellows for resistance - @ the 200 ohms setting i got 1.3 at each yellow now according to clymers i am supossed to get less then 1 what do you think? is that indicative of a stator sort? thanks in advance
Measure resistance from each yellow wire to ground: should be infinite resistance. Don't worry about the small difference in resistance you mentioned. Unplug stator from R/R, start bike and you should measure AC VOLTAGE between any 2 yellow wires ranging from about 6 volts at idle up to a max of about 60 volts at 8000 rpm. Inspect wires atop starter relay for melting or burning. Splice an additional wire from the R/R green wires and attach directly to battery negative post.
I find bike charging systems a complete PIA - especially when you don't know they have gone stupid. I fitted one of these AO Services - Battery Status Monitor for £20.00 At least now I know something has died and can nurse the bike home if need be I don't know if you can get something similar in the US?
