INEPTITUDE, but that's how you learn, if you learn. Someone screwed up, since there's usually no need to remove that piece from the carb set anyway.

Might be cheaper to take his bike to a shop than have you "fix" it??

Carb bodies are fragile and can be damaged easily, especially by over tightening or dropping.

Unless you have and understand the manual, chances for sucess are slim; in fact most chances of sucess with ANY non-running VF 500s are mostly poor, especially if you're on tight budget. There are more reliable bikes, and you can find many for sale. Sometimes it makes best sense to buy a good-running more expensive bike rather than something you get cheap, then try to fix.

I might have an extra airbox base plate, shoot me an e-mail and I'll check. Unlike S-man, I'm actually willing to help you out.

Squirrel did jump to some conclusions, but the OP was a little lacking for information. If there was more information including background, experience, how it broke, etc., you would have seen a slightly more concise but equally gruff response. He calls it as he sees it and he's right (mostly).

Every forum has a few people like this and in most cases people like Squirrel are among the most helpful/knowledgeable. Problems always arise on every forum when a newbie has his first run-in with this person and has not taken the time to read and learn who's who. No need to get all defensive.

Squirrel is a little tough on the 500, but he has his reasons. Stick around, there is more VF/VFR experience here than anywhere on the web.

doesn't matter how it broke or who the OP is .. he asked for help on attaining a part ... that simple!

I for one am tired or squirllgirls negative remarks towards any first gen bike.

We all know very well how you feel about the 500's. So why even post your negative comments?

as for the part I might have one if Jamie does not.

SORRY, Shawn, i might have made some improper assumptions about your mechanical background, but still wonder how that broke ??? Maybe a hidden manufacturing flaw that cxaused things to fall apart before you even touched it ?

This is an apology ! And everyone wants you to stick around, because everyone has something to contribute. You could contribute by explaining how an experienced tech like you mistakenly damaged that part, could be a good lesson to anyone.

i shouldnt have responded quite the way i did( had a bad day post rubbed me the wrong way) it broke because i wasnt paying attention when reinstalling the carbs. i didnt think it was as fragile as it is. i do feel like a dummy for breaking it, but i guarantee it wont happen again lol

Well, i was having a bad day too, like most days.

Many novice junior "mechanics" don't realize that carb pot metal is far weaker than steel or aluminum and is very brittle, so needs special care and a light touch.

You know Shawn, yesterday when I read your post the first thing that came to mind was snapping the plenum while mounting the carb/plenum assembly back onto the boots. We've all been there, cursing and swearing, putting full body weight trying to get that last boot to pop, busting our hands by making massive indentations into our palms before we smarten up and put a rag on them, etc., etc. I didn't ever think that it could break like that, but I guess I know now.

There are several methods to remounting the carbs that you can find with a search here. I always found, however, that some reasonable force was required. New boots really help.

I threw out a plenum last year thinking that no one would ever need one. Keep everything, lol.

You know, before I got my new carb boots, I actually had to stand (!) on my carb plate to get them installed correctly. I'm 250 lb. That being said, I think it was probably already cracked before you got to it. Either that you you seriously man-handled that fukker.

Good to hear things are back in order. Might I recommend new carb boots.....

The few things I learned having Re&Re the carbs on my 2nd Gen over and over again are:

    1. New Carb Boots help
    2. Installing the boots so they are right side up and they line up with the tabs on the carbs.
    3. Letting them sit in a Bowl of boiling hot water prior to installing

The last time I installed my carbs I followed all 3 of those and i couldn't believe how quickly and neatly they popped in. I was in such a shock I was double and triple checking the boots to make sure they were actually in.

The little trick about partially installing them at ~45° works well too.
