well i picked up an older VFR to tinker with. on the cheap too lol.

bike ran, then the kid put it down.. still ran after that as well.

his cousin came over i guess and the bike had a high idle.

his cousin decided he would adjust the idle
    which wasnt the idle..
he took a socket to one of the nuts on the carbs.
left side, the rod that goes through the carb for the throttle plate.
torqued it one way or the other.. whatever.
throttle was tight after that and couldnt snap back, he messed with that nut again.

well i go and look at it (ended up buying)
the thing would start but had a crazy high idle, and smoked like a freight train, and was leaking oil from the carbs???

pulled it apart, looked like the breather from the crank case was blowing oil into the air box and into the carbs

so somethign with the carbs is messed up firece. its creating to much pressure in the crank case
and its getting way to much fuel. the oil in the crankcase reeks of gas.
also the bowls are dripping gas as well, they didnt before he layed it down.
i think with whatever his cousin did to the carbs it just went all to hell.
and he didnt even remove them from the bike lol

so i think the carbs are fubarred

you think anything else may be messed up, or a new set of carbs should fix it right up?

motor still sounded good when running
and he was riding it daily before he put it down lightly in some gravel.

the smoking from the exhaust just has me worried. but im positive its from the amount of oil being dumped into the carbs, and the enormous amount of gas being dumped in there as well.

and the throttle plates being all out of whack.

i got this as a starter bike for the wife, so if she dumps it its no big deal. but id like to get it up and running here shortly or her.
