I am in the middle of rebuilding a 86 VFR700, really low miles and am thinking about rebuilding the carbs myself, especially since my local shops will not even work on a bike this old. A couple of questions for the more experienced; The Honda book and the Haynes manuals really do not show the spring layout on the linkages, can someone give me a quick rundown on proper placement? Also is it possible to make a flexible fuel line linkage betwwn the carbs instead of the hard plastic fuel tubes? Thanks for the help or any advice. Bill
As far as I know, there is no way to make a flexible gas hose fit. The hose is too flexible. I have heard of people making brass or aluminum tubes - but they are far better machinists than I will ever be. For a rebuild tutorial, try here: http://users.rcn.com/kochc/moto/carb/carb.html It should give you a good headstart. Take digital pictures as you disassemble the carbs. Keep the carbs in the same spot on the bench when you took pictures and do one carb at a time. You do not want to mix parts. Some are different between carbs. I leave the linkages attached to at least one of the carbs. And when I use a carb, I fasten the linkage to the other carb and remove it from the one I'm working on. That way, the linkage doesn't really move, just the carb does. Buy a Carb Dip "coffee" can to soak your carbs in. Don't remove the butterfly screws. They are staked and can strip easily if you try to remove them. Don't worry about the felt gasket on the throttle shaft. The carb dip won't hurt it. It will cause rubber to swell tremendously though. Since you have them apart, replace the Fuel tube O-rings. Make sure you get Nitrile gas-resistant ones. Not plumbing ones, they will disintegrate. In fact, today I got a Metric O-Ring kit from Harbor Freight with something like 396 O-Rings for $10. If your carbs are already apart, let me know and I will see if I can find any pics of a complete '86 VFR700 carb set.
Thanks for the advise, the carbs are still in place. The previous owner had tried to rebuild the carbs and just got to frustrated to finish. I know he replaced the fuel tubes and I am betting he did not replace/install o-rings. That would explain the large fuel leaks I am having.
