So it is the time of year for me to start getting the bike ready to ride... or sell. Last year I had the bike dyno'd at roughly 64hp and 34 ft*lbs torque. I was just wondering if this is the average output for others with similar bikes?

As for mods: "mystery" slip on mufflers, a "mystery" jet kit that cost me $120, K&N air filter. <---- the PO did the mufflers and I forget the name of the jet kit I had a shop install.

The reason I would like to know is that the stock, new machines (in 85) were 86bhp and 40-some torque. So it is reasonable to me for it to drop 20% or so at the wheels. But if this is below what others are achieving, I would like to sell the bike. I love the bike, but I can't justify putting another $2000 into the bike and eating KD to afford tuition. Thanks

If you had it dynoed on a load control dyno that included a O2 sensor you'd know if it was tuned properly. HP figures will be off wether it's too rich or too lean. I thought my 86 750 was good until I put it on a dyno with a sniffer. Found out it was stupid rich in the mid range and too lean on top. Of course your mystery slip-ons could have a direct effect as well. They may be no better than stock exhaust in terms of flow.

The mystery slip ons, to my understanding, are a couple of mufflers that a shop here in town made to fit the bike. So I'm lead to believe...

The dyno at the shop did have an O2 sensor and has it all perfectly set up, well as good as it could really get. I just wish I could find my chart they printed for me...

Slip-ons often cause a loss of power on the early VF's, but not to that degree. I'd run a compression check on the engine to see what's going on there. You should have in the 75-80hp range and it sounds like you are a good deal from that. If that checks ok it might be worthwhile to have another shop dyno it. Operator error could be a factor here.

I've got the bike stored away in a friends garage an hour away, so I can't check the compression for probably a month or two. So hypothetically speaking, if the compression checks out fine, what could be the cause of the lower power? Also, if the compression is low, then I'm probably looking at big $$$ to replace rings and/or other stuff, correct?

I was actually just on my way home to post that :)

There is a little over 26000 miles on it.

I only bought it in May of last year and have pretty much no information about it before, other than the kid before me laid it down at least once, then the owner before was the Honda car dealer general managers wife, then there are at least 3 other owners. So maintenance in the past is quite a guessing game. Last year I put $1500 or so of maintenance in to it . New jet kit, air filter, oil filter, and some other stuff. I have not replaced the spark plugs on it nor have I seen the engine myself. I know once the mechanics took it apart and put the jets in they said everything "looked" fine inside and it was running good. I do not know if they did a compression test or really anything except put the jets in.
