    Hey folks.

I have an 85 VF500 that has a front end that shudders a bit when braking (only the last few mph when coming to a complete stop). I can see that the steering tube/headset is moving a little bit. I took off the clipons, top of the triple tree, and tried tightening the primary nut and locknut. Even though it seems tight on the stand, and the shuddering/movement have decreased, it's still there a little. I'm wondering how tight should I go with the nut? The bars move side to side without "binding", but i'm at the point where i'm putting a fair bit of oompf into tightening the nut.

Or is there some other problem that I've incurred?

Just thought i'd check before i give it another shot at tightening the bolt even farther.

    Thanks.

The torque for the steering stem adjusting nut is 17 - 20 ft/lbs. If more than this is necessary to take the slack out of the steering stem, you might want to inspect the bearings for damage/wear. The torque for the cap nut on top of the triple tree is 58-87 ft/lbs.

This sounds like a dangerous condition. As noted, check the bearings before going further.

Just plan on replacing both bearing sets with OEM parts. Once the balls have worn and the races have a groove worn into them the setup can't be properly adjusted any longer.

For reference, All Balls bearings are manufactured in China.
