I used to own an 86 vfr 750 and a 93 vfr 750. Both had the dreaded regulator rectifier problem. Does this problem exist on the vf1kr?
That sucks! When disassembling the bike, I've discovered a repair job on the rectifier that looks spotty. Thanks for that.
While you in there upgrade the positive wire from the r/r unit to the battery to include a fuse at the r/r and a large guage wire. Since this is around 35 amps the fuse should be about 35 to 40 and fast blow. The wire if you can find it should be a 14awg 28/36, but that is hard to find so normal 12awg 12 or more strands (many strands of smaller wire is better tan few strands of larger wire, this allows lower resistance and larger currents to flow before it gets hot). Run a separate sense wire to the battery. Most spotty jobs tie these two wire together but one is a supply wire and the other controls the battery charge voltage. If its not there then the r/r will not provide proper voltage and will get hotter than its supposed to. Make sure the r/r back plate has some cpu thermal paste between it and the frame and that the negative lead goes to frame as well. The paste is to thermally bond the frame to the r/r thus increasing the r/r surface area to help cool it.
