I bought a 1984 Interceptor vf1000f this summer and kinda killed it in a month. The bike was a little low on oil when I got it, not oil light on low, but low. The cooling fans were not working so I'm guessing it had overheated before. On my last ride it began to overheat (even with the fans on) then as I pulled back into my house I noticed a Clanking noise, the more throttle, the more clanking. It also would no longer idle. I've taken the valve covers off and the cams, rocker arms, cam chain, valve clearances all that stuff looks fine (according to my semi-mechanic friend). He now thinks that a crank bearing has gone bad and that we should pull the enging to see, but he thought I should ask the pros for their opinion first. The bike still starts and runs, it even idled again but still makes the ugly clanking noise. Any help would be greatly appreciated, this old school bike it too cool to let die. Thanks
Clanking noises cannot be good. Most times I have heard noises that I would describe as clanking, in any type of engine, it's been lower rod bearings. You certainly need to check it out before running it again. Lane
you need to check oil pressure to determine easily if you've destroyed a bearing, so plug a mechanical gauge into somewhere like standard oil pressure fitting hole. low pressure means it's ruined. it was probably halfway gone when u bought it. might be best (cheaper) to just find another bike..........
