Hello, I have a 84 vfr 700, it is a great bike and good condition. However I am wondering if there are replacement parts for the camshaft when it eventually goes. I have a 73 cb750 and I took it to Cycle X to get the engine completed bored out and upgraded and really turning the bike into a rocket. I was wondering if there is something similar in the US for the V style engine or should I try and replace the parts as the break.
Hey there! 1st of all, you have a 84 VF700F. You can have the cams and followers (or maybe a toast donor set) welded up and reground into a hotter profile. It is NOT CHEAP. Boring V4 cylinders (cases) is also NOT CHEAP. If you want some extra displacement (like maybe 50cc?), look for a 83/84 750 engine and perhaps build up a "hot" motor while you enjoy your 700. Enjoy your bike and perhaps stay on the lookout for good used parts to stash if you think this is a long term keeper. A properly tuned stock 700/750 with some light mods is pretty enjoyable, just getting harder to keep on the road. But there is always an option, and they usually start with an $.
compared to any VFR, the VF series is old school junk. so many improvements, mostly engine, a VF rider would need to experience the difference. overall value of the average condition Vfs is way below VFR value, and '86/'87 VFRs rarity will keep it appreciating imo. VFR is top of the VF class, so step up if you can.
