Hi Ihave a 91 750FM VFR and I love it, it has the gear driven cams which I have been told is a great setup for the bike, making it very responsive, anyway, one day I hope to buy a newer VFR, maybe an 800 2003 upwards, but Iis it true that these models no longer have gear driven cams, and can anyone tell me if a chain driven model will be much different in the ride or excelleration,

    many thanks Steve

I have both a 3rd Gen (1993) and a 6th Gen (2007) and yes you are correct, the VFR models produced from 2003 and onward have chain driven cams. Also keep in mind that models produced from 2003 and onward also have a VTEC engines which means the number of valves per cylinder increases from 2 to 4 at a certain RPM level to provide more power further into the RPM range. The exact RPM that this transition occurs depending on the exact year of the bike since the transition point was lowered from 6800 rpms to 6400 rpms in 2006. Many owners including myself find the transition from 2 valves to 4 values to be rather abrupt and jerky which at times can be annoying. Other find the transition to be much less noticeable and this really seems to vary from bike to bike and rider to rider. Even though the abrupt transition can be smoothed out with the addition of a new fuel map and aftermarket exhaust many VFR owners actually enjoy the way the VTEC kicks in since the engine takes on a aggressive new sound and the bike comes alive (almost like a turbo suddenly kicking in)

All VFR's produced from 1998 and onward will have linked brakes and fuel injection unliked the older carburated models. From 2003 and onward VFR's are also available with ABS brakes. Overall the 2003+ models are much better built than previous generation VFR's. I personally am not thrilled with the VTEC engine and would much rather have the the smoother more linear acceleration found on the old models but I am a big fan of the 6th gen looks and built quality.

I previously owned a 5th Gen and currently own a 6th Gen. 2002 was the year that they went from the gear driven cams to chain. This doesn't really have any impact on the ride or acceleration. The ride is more defined by the 5th Gen or 6th Gen chassis. As far as the motors go, I could not notice any real change in performance. The 6th Gen does have the VTEC and as you will read, some people are bothered by it. My bike is the 2007 which had the lowered RPM engagement and for myself, it has never been a problem - even when kicking in mid-corner.

I had both a 4th and a 5th at the same time for awhile. I like them both for different reasons.
