I have a buddy with a 86 750 engine he is looking to get rid of. the price is not that bad. about 350.00-400.00, i was wondering would it be worth the investment to upgrade to a 750 from a 700. Its only 50 cc. and i plan to add jet kit, get new exhaust, 520 conversion, oil mods, etc, etc which should add some HP to the old 700. But the thought is really lingering, that maybe i should just go ahead and upgrade to 750 and UPGRADE that one the same i would with the 700....But are those 50cc worth the cost? now i have completely stripped the bike to the frame and upgrading a lot of other parts...would that 350 be better spent somewhere else or is that 750 a good investment for the cost.

    there's no replacement for displacement.....

you want to keep the "classic" don't change it
you want to go faster change it (or buy a newer bike)

Here are the specs, you make the decision:

    700: 81 BHP @ 10000 RPM 46.3 ft*lb Torque @ 7500 RPM

    750: 86 BHP @ 10000 RPM 44.8 ft*lb Torque @ 7500 RPM

Is the 5 HP worth $350?

what you need to look at first for this project is how much trouble it would be to either make the 86 motor run without the Cam Pulse Generator, or if you could wire and adapt the 87 for the sensor. if either of these solutions is easy or feasible, then go for it. a 750 motor would be damned nice to have.

But i am just going to leave the 700 alone and sup it up in other ways.

If your 700 engine is in good shape, leave it in there. Although the engines look just alike, there are differences with the wiring from year to year and model to model. According to mason's numbers, the 700 makes more torque anyway.

Yeah, but you would get power all over. You can feel the difference between the two, that's for sure. I don't know if it's worth $400 unless it comes with carbs and wiring, but it's really not that bad of a deal. Don't forget that people buy $600 exhausts everyday that provide 2-3hp gain.

that is a very good point, cause that is definitely on the "to do list". but major concern is that my mechanical skills are limited. so when it comes to the wiring and things of that nature i may be at a lost as to how to put the 750cc mill in the bike and get it working....properly. At least with the 700 i can follow word for word of of the clymers or haynes. no since of driving myself into a deeper depression over the engines, just work with what i have and upgrade where i mechanically can.
