5th gen windscreen broken screw mount repair

    Hi all, due to a recent drop (I thought my side stand was deployed, I know it was a dumb mistake), the windsceen screw mount broke off. What can I use to glue or bond it back to the upper cowl. By the look at it, the PO broke that too & prob. used epoxy. Here are some pics:

    Hey Nookiaz

    Is that part of the cover plate that goes on the inside of the windscreen, or part of the upper cowl. If it is the little black cover piece on the inside then you could probably take it down to a local body shop and ask them if they can put it back on with some two part epoxy.

    If it is part of the upper cowl itself, I might suggest the same thought. On my 97 VFR I had a minor tip over when the side stand sank in to the asphalt and I cracked off a piece of the upper cowl and one of the local body shops I do work for was able to bond a small piece of steel to the rear of the joint and then they plastic welded it all together. I had to get the area painted afterwards but it turned out really well and was very strong.

    Gawd, that was fast! Thanks Mr. Z. It's part of the upper cowl. Is the epoxy from Can Tire as strong as the stuff used @ the body shop? If not, your tutorial on upper cowl removal will come in handy :)

    I found this on a quick search of the net, and thought it might come in handy. Not sure if the two part epoxy from Canadian Tire would be strong enough to prevent the joint from cracking free again. You might check with someone at say Lordco Auto Parts and see if they carry a plastic repair kit. The two part epoxy the body shop used on my bike was the same stuff they use for repairing auto bumpers and smaller trim pieces. The tech at the body shop next to my shop took my whole upper cowl piece (the 97 upper cowl was a multi piece affair so i just gave him the damaged piece so it was easier to work on) and epoxied a piece of sheet metal from an old door skin and bonded it to the back of the fairing piece and one it had hardened it was just like it was all plastic. Once that was finished he repaired the outer crack by sanding a small wedge using a rotary tool and used a plastic filling compound to repair the crack on the outside. Then he sanded everything smooth and painted the piece. I think he charged me about $80 including the paint but I have to admit to doing work for the body shop in question on a regular basis so they gave me a smokin deal.
