    Hi All,

I am scratching my head, my VFR800FI 2001 after a long ride and stopping at the petrol station, did not enough charge in the battery to even make it click.

So I test the regulator, which seemed fine.

So I search this forum, read all I could find and have checked the earths, wiring for burning, stator check for Ohms fine etc. All good. 9Didn't do a AC voltage check on it because I don't know how).

I retested it an it was the same result! At about 108 degrees and the charging volts dropped off (at any revs). I am guessing this is cuasing the flat battery.

So I got a new voltage regulator and it seems ok...BUT

...Although again at 100-103 degrees at idle te voltage drops to about 12.8 volts, only difference is reving upto 5k takes it back to ~14 volts.

Is this normal or am I missing something, am so confused and am hoping I don't need a new Stator as well.

    Any thoughts?

    Slaps forehead!

Urm about 100 degrees is when the dual radiator fans kick in. I am guessing with that load it'd be fair for the voltage to drop from ~13.5 at idle to !2.9 volts.

Think I might have this one nailed. Better wait until morning for a long long test ride :)

    Normal.

Discharge at near idle speed is normal; voltage increases with speed.

Hello, I also just replaced the voltage regulator on my 96 VFR. The system was not charging so I followed the service manual which help me verify a bad regulator. Well, now the system charges at 14.2 V @3K rpm. However, at that RPM the regulator feels hot to the touch. How hot should the voltage regulator get? I'm a little worried about the temperature as I don't know what is considered normal. I already emailed the company (RM Stator) asking for a temperature specs. Would applying some heat transfer compound on the regulator to frame surface help dissipate some of the heat over to the bike's frame?

The heat sink compound is a good move. I did that and a computer fan on the R/R as well. Its about a 3x3 inch fan that draws .15 amps. I strapped it to the R/R with just wire ties and wired it into the license plate light. Dropped the temp from 150deg F to just over 100 deg F via an infrared thermometer when idling for 5 minutes with the high beam on. Find an old computer and get yourself a cooling fan.
