5th gen. spitting out antifreeze

I have a '99 VFR and have had a couple times where the bike's temp went above 225 and once the bike was shut off it ended up spitting out antifreeze out. Has anyone run into this? The fans kick on at 220 so I know they work. I just bought the bike last year and am puzzled by why it is doing this as it was maybe 60 degrees last night when it happened? Is there air in the system or is it another problem?

 

Time for a new thermostat. It is a pain in the but job, but I did it last summer and am very glad I did. There is a pictoral on how to do it by member Action. Check that out and see if it is something you want to tackle.

 

also make sure the system is full of fluid. if there is air in the system it makes it a lot easier to boil and wont cool the bike as well

 

Oh, right, if it has spewed more than once it will over heat quicker and you could have a false reading on the temp gauge.

My buddy Pez had a similar problem with his Ducati 999 Musashi. We pulled into a gas station one Saturday afternoon to gas up. The bike had been shut down for a few minutes,when it suddenly started to puke coolant out of the overflow hose. This continued for several minutes. It turned out that his thermostat was sticking. Thermostat failures are actually fairly rare,but they do occur occasionally. If this sounds like what's happening to your bike,then I'm with Drewl,a new thermostat should fix you up. As stated previously,make sure that the cooling system is completely bled of any air bubbles. After you fill the radiator and coolant overflow tank,the Honda Service Manual says to warm the bike up for a few minutes,then quickly blip the throttle 3 or 4 times to approximately 5000 revs,then shut the bike down and let it cool. This is supposed to remove any trapped air bubbles in the system. Recheck (and adjust if necessary) the coolant level in the radiator when the bike has cooled off. Hope this helps you.

 

If the bike has radiator fans, make sure the fanstat works.

Hrmm, well it looks like I may replacing a cap and the thermostat then. The fluid is being burped out of the overflow hose. Honda wants $36 for a new cap. Anybody know the specs on the cap as I have heard I can just take the current one to a autoparts store and find one that fits with a 16lb rating
