When I turn the ignition on, the odometer displays 188888 or something similar, then goes completely blank after the bike finishes 'starting up'. Running or not running makes no difference with it. Trip meter works, speedometer works, tachometer works. Back of the dash has no burnt connectors or wiring. What should I look at next?

I have never had that happen but I would start with checking your regulator\rectifier voltage while running. I know when mine. Was bad it was putting out close to 17 volts at around 2000 rpm. And was causing all sorts of weird stuff to happen. Other than that I'm sorry I wouldn't know. Because I believe. The info or control for mileage is in the ecu. I guess you could check your speedo control attached to your countershaft sprocket and make sure there are no shorts on it.

Any chance you could circle the speedo control you mentioned?

Also, the R/R and Stator are both new, mosfet R/R and ricks stator. Last I checked it was a solid 14.3-14.4v from idle to 5000rpm.

Your good on the charging system for sure. I'm not good enough to post pictures I sure as heck couldn't circle it. It will be attached to your front sprocket cover with two 8mm heads. Mine says tdk on it. The wire from it connects just above the coolant tank. Kinda hard to get at it without taking the fairing off. But you should be able to take the two fairing nuts off and just pull it back some to get to it. I'm not saying that is what is causing it just that its something to check because it is part of your mileage. Maybe its just yor display is going bad? Has it been in a heavy rain or washed? Do you have a service manual? If not I can look it up when I get home and see if there's anything about it. Good luck

Yeah I didn't figure it would be cheap. Your manual should give you a way to test your speedo though.

The most I could find in the manual could only tell me it was faulty.

Yeah, factory and haynes. Have not checked the haynes yet, but the factory manual is a PDF I got off the net.

I checked my manual and your right there is not a real way to test just the mileage. Maybe you could find a used one somewhere . Its strange that everything else works fine. There is a way to do a self diagnostic test on your bike. But I think you need a test pin box? I'm not sure exactly how it all works but I. Have seen a code for the vehicle speed sensor. Try to just unplug your speed sensor and see if tat helps. If there is a short in it that may clear it up. Worth a try anyway.

Mileage is store on the circuit board attached to the dash display panel.

I have a spare board you can try if you want. I think it has around 20+ k miles on it. I would like the board back but if you are interested in paying shipping, I can send it to you for troubleshooting purposes.

The board plugs in just behind the LCD display. You should see it on a parts breakdown but I'm not sure if it's sold separately and don't feel like looking. If it's displaying 8s then it stands to reason that the display is ok and the problem is probably with the board running it.

I have had destroyed dash panels and swapped the boards on new panels to maintain the correct vehicle mileage.

Interesting. Learn something new everyday. Very nice of you to let him try your spare one. That's what I like about this forum fellow bikers helping each other out. Just think where we were before the internet.

Thanks tink, but shipping would probably be $25+ each way. I would like to have an odometer but I have been using trip meter b as my odometer :p

appears I did not take any photos of how the components mate together. I did a search on google and couldn't find anything either.

Here's a pic of the board. You can see the 6 lugs that attach the board and make connection with the circuit traces on the back of the gauge assembly. The two buttons are there for Temp and Odometer.

The two prong plug may have been the connector for the ambient temp sensor but I can't remember for sure

The LCD attaches with 4 flat tabs that poke through narrow slots on the board. It's easier to pick them out on the rear view of the board. The 4 slots are surrounded by a black circle.

    Ah, thanks.

I can't take my VFR down for the time needed to completely take it down to swap the boards right now, since it would need to come right back apart. Maybe this winter when I swap my gauges to blue LED's and do a HID retrofit, if you still have the board.

sure. keep an eye on ebay and you might find a smashed set for cheap you can pick up for parts. Never know what you'll find but it seems like all the clusters I saw when I was looking for them were rediculous

Sorry to bring back an old thread but this is the same problem I'm having. Took the cluster out and none of the traces on the back are corroded or separated. Did the ground wire found in this thread http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/index.php/topic/61180-dead-lcd/ but did not fix the problem.

Odometer shows 188888 then disappears completely. Like to get this fix so I can sell the bike, hard to sell without fixing this problem.
