There have been some remarks concerning some possible heat issues causing a defect in the 98/99 VFR800 Dash covers. The 2000/2001 had two funky plastic wedge insert above the tach and speedo. My question. Has anyone replaced the dash cover with the new one? I am wondering how difficult it is to do. I have priced the part just wondering if I should have the dealer do it or me. I could do it but I would need my Momma holding my hand )

THe question is if your current Gen 5 Mk 1 has dash warp, if not then not then its not worth it mind the Mk2 Tach has a cool VFR decal.

My 2000 does not have the two plastic doohickeys but does have the cool VFR logo tach. I'm still at a loss to determine how the dash could warp.

    KC-10 FE out...

My 2000 had the dash "wrinkle" next to the crease when I bought it. It was a one-owner 4,000 mile garage queen that I drove from Kansas to Ohio to pick up. Since the rest of the bike was excellent, I assumed this was an issue that pops up as the bike gets older and I decided to replaced the dash/fairing inserts to freshen it up. My replacement had the metal tabs in the creases, which would indicate that Honda was fixing something. It looks like something got hot, but the backside looks fine. This may be a injection molding defect that out-gasses and shrinks with age. Yes, I'm guessing.

As far as replacing the dash cover, I just followed the service manual pdf and didn't have any problems. Just take your time and put a soft bath towel over the tank while you are working on it. Nothing hurts like a slipped screw-driver across the tank of your VFR...

I took a photo of the front and back of the dash (see below). It appears that the vertical reinforcement rib comes to a point on the backside just where the deformed area is on the front.

    Noid,
Did you have to remove the front fairing or just the black portions?
    Thanks,
    Brian

I sent you a P.M. This was October last year, but as I recall, I just removed the mirrors, side panels, windshield and inserts. I replaced all four of the black pieces so they would all match. The pieces are really dark graphite/gray and are more subject to fading IMHO. However, I was wanting mine to start out looking showroom condition so I could add all the "character" myself...

Just so others will know what we are talking about, I took a photo of the replacement panel with the inserts that cover the areas that can deform. After my first ride, I never noticed the covers again.

    Come on DVMSVFR,

Get a step latter, get up on that VFR and craw around with a screw driver, a wrench and a couple of sockets and just "get er done". From your avatar, you will fit in all the hard to get places. If you get lost or stuck inside the fairing, I will send Dorthy and Toto out to help.
