I've been trying to deduce this charging issue with my bike now for a few weeks. Here are the symptoms, can one of the guru's tell me if this sounds like an R/R issue? I just got the bike and read that the R/R is known to go bad around 14K miles.

    1996 VFR 4th Gen
    9,600 miles
Been in storage for most of it's life :(
Battery charged on 2 amps until full
Ride about 50-60 miles and stop
    Bike won't start
Jump bike, runs fine until I stop again
    Jump bike, repeat.

So could this be a stator issue, or most likely the R/R?

There is a test procedure in the factory service manual. Could be R/R, could be bad connections at the fuse or at the Stator to harness connector. Could be a bad battery. The longer you mess around with it before diagnosing it properly and getting it remedied, you risk damaging other components.

Get out your volt meter, if you dont have one go out and pick up a cheap one. Check battery voltage with the engine off, should be a little over 12 volts if the battery is fully charged. With the bike running you should see around 13.5 to 14.5 volts at the battery. Usually 13.5 at idle and around 14.5 at 5 thousand rpm is pretty standard. If thats the case, then go out and get yourself a new battery. Also make sure you have a battery tender to keep it ship shape when the bike sits for longer periods of time.
