Bought a 93 VFR last season, really excited about the bike. The starter clutch failed in August'12 and goes away for the winter.

Pulled out the bike the other day, swapped outer housing, caps, springs, and rollers, filter and eventually battery. -thanks to starter clutch post by Gareth_VFR.

Went to start bike and engine cranked but very weak/slow. Swapped battery even though old one was still reading 12v. Checked relays and fuses, pulled and checked starter. Sounds like its some sort of mechanical resistance stopping the engine from turning faster. I'm going to pull check and reinstall the starter clutch tomorrow just to double check.

-If I can't get it to start after that, what's the next thing to check?

pull the spark plugs and see if it turns over faster than normal speed or not, it could be a corroded electrical ground connection rather than anything wrong with the starter clutch--hardly ever hear of them going bad.

Never mind. I got it figured out. Starter clutch reduction gear was in backwards. It fell off when I was taking the starter clutch off, and I must have put it back on backwards. I flipped it over, cover back on, oil back in, started up first try. Runs great now.

this is what i had seen, check that
