3rd gen starter bike. Carb and electrical q's

So my roommate and I picked up a '91 with ~25,000 on it but its been sitting for a while and would defiantly benefit from a carb rebuild. We've got a quote of $350 from a reputable shop to do it but I'm wondering if this is something that we could do ourselves. The carb itself doesn't really intimidate us but getting it off of the bike does. We're noobies but somewhat mechanically inclined, any thoughts?

Also, the bike has some weird electrical things going on but thats probably just because it needs a new batt...(find out if the batt fixes it later today) The bike will start but the headlights flicker and the engine eventually cuts off unless going down hill. Could this be symptomatic of a bad voltage regulator?

I'm not big on carb's myself... As for the electrical: A new battery is cheap enough and if it's been sitting it would be a good place to start. If that doesn't fix the electrical issue or the battery won't stay charged then look at the charging system.

The carbs come off easier than one might be led to believe. Once the boots are loose and the cables are disconnected, a simple pry bar will pop them out quite easily. I just did a carb cleaning on my bike in December, and was surprised how easy it turned out to be.

$6.99 for a can of carb cleaner.

 

it's harder to get the carbs back on than removing them but a good lesson in patience!!
