I had the same problem with my VFR and it seems that when going old, the LCD does disappear. Just light but no time.. I looked a while for replacement but the new one costs almost 300 euros, so I gave up and replaced it with small battery clock with thermometer. Later I have found few full instrumental modules with the clock from eBay.de for less than 100 euros, you could look there if you need a new one.

Just the battery operated cheap one, cost about 5 euros. I placed it between the dash and the screen, so it is pretty well safe from the rain. I also added a volt meter where the clock originally was.
