Hi everybody, I´m facing a problem with my VFR 800 1999 which seriousness is not quite clear to me. I spent last week in Dolomiti in Italy. I was having really great time when all of a sudden shifting from the 4th gear to 3rd gear before the cornering I lost my 3rd gear. It is like I have now 2 idle positions (between 1st and 2nd gear/2nd and 4th). There was no noisy sound coming from the gear box and after a call with my mechanic I continued on my way. Motorcycle worked well and I managed to ride it for other 1 400 km. Can anybody tell me whether the problem is inside the gearbox or outside just with the shifting mechanism? Does anybody have any experience this kind?

+1. Sounds like that the gears are probably fine since there was no sound or harsh shift. This is quite a common problem with motorcycles in general, although it usually happens for second gear.

Many thanks for your reaction. It means I have to get the engine out of the frame, doesn´t it? I thought as well the problem was with the bent shift fork but manual says there is one shift fork for 3rd and 4th gears (gear wheels are firmly connected). 4th gear works fine. If one shift fork determined for two gears was bent, would that be possible one gear worked fine and the other didn´t at all?

that is the norm if one fork is bent, most of the time it only affects one gear.
and yes Engine must come out and case has to be split.

On the main shaft there are lock shaft washers I think the washer had split and has allowed the 3rd gear to float. you will have 4th but not 3rd,so in that scenario if you can drain the oil and through the oil drain hole insert a small magnet search for the split washer to confirm this. If you find a piece of it the engine has to come out and split. average cost 1500. to do. Sorry Cheers. see my avatar pic.. Mike R.. The picture is genaric the site that supplied it has your parts.
